Smart Lock Installation in San Diego
Keypad and app-controlled locks that actually work with your door, installed and programmed by a locksmith, not guessed at from a YouTube video.
Quick answer
Action Locksmith San Diego installs keypad, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart locks on homes, ADUs, apartments and vacation rentals throughout the city of San Diego. We help you pick a lock that fits your door and your use, install and align it so the motor doesn't bind, program your codes, and set up the backup key. Typical labor is in the $100 to $200 range plus the lock. Call (619) 304-9446.

Smart lock services
Keypad deadbolts
The workhorse: codes for family, guests and cleaners, no phone required. Best value for most homes and rentals.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart locks
Lock and unlock from your phone, see who came in, and give time-limited codes remotely.
Retrofit smart locks
Smart on the inside, your existing key and deadbolt on the outside. Popular for condos and HOAs with hardware rules.
Vacation rental setups
Locks that generate guest codes per booking, so nobody ever hands over a key. See our property manager services.
Door prep and alignment
Smart locks fail when the bolt binds. We fix strike alignment and door sag first so the motor lasts.
Programming and walkthrough
Codes, app pairing, auto-lock timing and the backup key, explained before we leave.
Coastal-rated options
Not every smart lock survives salt air. We'll steer beach-side homes to the ones that do.
Replacement and repair
Dead smart lock? We diagnose, replace or swap back to a conventional deadbolt.
Who smart locks make sense for
- Vacation rental owners and property managers who are tired of rekeying between guests.
- Families with kids who get home before you do.
- Anyone who keeps a hide-a-key under the mat. Please stop.
- ADU and granny-flat owners who want the tenant on their own code.
- Older relatives who struggle with keys but can manage four digits.
- Small businesses that want to delete an employee's code instead of rekeying.
Choosing the right smart lock
Start with the door, not the app. A warped door, a misaligned strike, or a thick fiberglass slab rules out certain models. Then decide what you actually need: a keypad alone is cheaper, simpler and never needs your phone; app control adds remote codes and activity logs but needs Wi-Fi at the door and batteries you'll remember to change. Condos and HOA homes often need a retrofit lock that keeps the original exterior hardware. Beach homes in Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach need weather-rated models. Tell us how you'll use it and we'll recommend one or two, no upsell.
Why have a locksmith install it
Most smart lock failures we get called for aren't the lock. They're a bolt that binds because the strike was never aligned, a door that sags in summer, or an install that left the backup key cylinder unusable. A smart lock puts a small motor where your hand used to be, and the motor can't force a bolt the way you can. We fix the door first, then install the lock, then prove the backup key works, because one day the batteries will die at the worst possible time.
How it works
-
1
Tell us the door and the use
Rental, family, ADU, business. Existing deadbolt or not. We'll recommend a lock and quote labor and hardware.
-
2
Install and align
Door and strike are corrected, the lock is installed, the bolt is tested by hand and by motor.
-
3
Program and hand over
Your codes are set, the app is paired if you want it, auto-lock is configured and the backup key is tested.

Smart Locks questions
Which smart lock is best for a vacation rental in San Diego?
A weather-rated keypad deadbolt with per-guest codes and a physical key backup. Models that integrate with your booking platform can generate and expire codes automatically. We'll recommend one for your door and manage the install; see our vacation rental services.
Will a smart lock work on my old door?
Usually, once the door is aligned. Very thick, very thin or badly warped doors limit the choices, which is why we look at the door before recommending a model.
What happens if the battery dies?
You use the backup key, which is why we test it during the install. Most locks warn you weeks before the batteries are done, and some accept a 9-volt battery on the outside for an emergency boost.
Can you install a smart lock I already bought?
Yes. We'll check it's a fit for the door first, then install, align and program it.
