OB is a small town inside a big city, and its locks reflect that. Most of the housing is beach cottages, converted duplexes and walk-up apartments built between the 1920s and the 1960s along streets like Cable, Bacon, Abbott and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. A lot of that hardware is original or close to it, and a few blocks from the pier the salt air corrodes cheap locks until keys stick, cylinders bind and deadbolts stop throwing. We see it every week, and we carry coastal-rated hardware on the van so the replacement lasts longer than the one it replaces.

OB is also one of the densest vacation rental neighborhoods in San Diego.
